I listened to the album and I gotta admit, kind of a let-down. Mired in 80's production and not as strong as what came before or after, it lacks the punch of the rest of his work, but even with that it's still decent music and Hunter's skills as a writer still shine through.
Ballads "Old Records Never Die" is decent enough and "Rain" has some nice imagery but once again, the production of the record as a whole really drags things Bring Me Down - Tom Fuller Band - Freedom. It's all just so stale and dry and it just feels stiff. A looser sound with more bottom end would have suited the songs so much better and it's a shame that the results were what they were.
The bonus material is of note particularly in the fact that we got a version of "China" with Mick Ronson on vocals as well as a bunch of alternate versions and mixes of other tracks on the record.
I guess if you find this at a decent enough price then pick it up, but I don't think it was worth what I paid for it. Still, Ian is Ian and that isn't a bad thing. One person found this helpful. Item as described. Ian Hunter ushers in the new-wave movement.
I have been an Ian Hunter Fan for many years, but this is truly bad! For true Ian Hunter fans they might consider it worth it for this song only. The musical accompaniment on most songs is truly dreadful! Format: Audio CD. Now it's and like In Her Eyes (Dmitriy Bulakov Remix) - Various - Uplifting Trance And Melodic Energy Trance Anthems V of his 70s peers, Ian was unsure about what to do in the face of punk and new wave.
So he goes with the times. This might seem to be a bit of a sell out after the success of the straight up rock and roll on You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic.
And they are all over the place. Jones even co-produced the album with Mick Ronson. So there are a lot of Clash-like flourishes. One of my friends Viviane Touka Et Ses Tziganes - Hora Staccato the time stated that Ian had "Clashed out. However, there are a few gems in this otherwise over-produced effort.
Rain is a gentle ballad about living your life in your hometown, wanting to get out, but feeling stuck. A close listen to the lyrics uncovers a great song beneath the production. The bonus discs contains "long odds and outtakes" that show what this album might have been with being "Clashed out. It's obvious why some of the other demos weren't fully developed into songs. The main album is a very good with very bad production, but the bonus disc is awesome!
Would love to see Ian finish it up as many are demos. Here is a track by track ranking. Central Park 'n' West - 9 2.

It is doubtful that it was Ronson's idea to add the sound effects and odd distortions on some of the tracks. While these effects might be interesting on a Godley and Creme album, they distract from Hunter's strengths--a strong sense of melody with intense autobiographical edgy lyrics. The album isn't a complete failure. Hunter is in fine voice throughout and many of these tracks are inspired.
